Artist Statement

My practice explores existing in a body that has endured trauma through the lens of a young woman, examining physicality, memory, vulnerability, shame and the internal gaze. Through photography, painting, sculpture, textiles and autobiographical writing, I investigate the ways trauma, neurodivergence, Catholicism and family history shape the female body’s ability to feel embodied and present. Alongside these themes, I explore my experience as a second-generation immigrant, considering belonging, family, nationality and my relationship to this land through questions of positionality and isolation.

I work through layering, transparency and repetition, bringing together subjects, spaces, memories and emotions to reflect the experience of existing in multiple places at once: between memory and the present, and between the physical body and what is has endured. Materiality is central to my practice. I work intuitively with each medium, allowing the properties of the material to inform the work rather than beginning with a fixed outcome. In textiles, for example, I follow its unique texture to inform the patterns of veins to evoke the look of skin. While in photography I layer and manipulate images to converge different glimpses of time and space, attempting to communicate the fragmented experience of traumatic memory and living with ptsd.

My practice is influenced by conceptual and propositional thinking, first-wave feminist art and abject art, with particular influence from Eva Hesse, Nan Goldin and Janine Antoni. My work values brutal honesty and vulnerability above all, I submit myself to Hilma Af Klints ideas of an automatic art practice, with my body at the centre as a bridge through which authentic unadulterated and perhaps unbecoming work flows from me. Through these methods, I seek to create work that is embodied, self-reflective, and rooted in the physicality of memories resurfacing within the feminine body.
